FINALLY: A Community Project Creates Opportunity For Everyone To Help

DATELINE: Los Angeles

Alec Baldwin, Kevin Bacon Help To Homeless on X-mas Eve

Ever wonder what happens to all that wasted, unused, over quantity prepared food restaurants and food stores surplus every year, every month, and even every day? Michael J. Herman did and his team of over 200 volunteers are doing something about it.

The project is called "The Needy Smorgasbord" T and it is recruiting individuals and food companies to offer a little bit one day each month on a regular and recurring basis. By each restaurant, supermarket, or food company, in a pool of more than 100 companies donating 40-50 meals once each month, every week, more than 100 hungry people on Skid Row will finally be able to enjoy regularity in nutrition and hunger can be beaten.

As part of a course called SELP (Self Expression and Leadership Program) offered by LA-Based Landmark Education Corporation, Herman had to take on something for the benefit of the community and enroll the assistance of others in his community to achieve the project goals. Herman chose the issue of hunger. The goal of the project is to systematically replace hunger with sustenance and nutrition through volunteerism and corporate benevolence. Each participating food company receives an award identifying them as Platinum Donors for The Needy Smorgasbord.

"There is so much wasted food everywhere that it made no sense why there should be so many hungry and suffering people in our community." So Herman created The Needy Smorgasbord T.

"It's really simple" says Herman whose 20 plus years of raising $49 million for the Disabled gave birth to the idea. "We're asking for only a little bit from everyone involved and that way we're going to feed everyone. We're starting on Christmas Eve Day."

The launch event will happen at the corner of San Pedro St. and 6 th St. in Los Angeles otherwise known as Tent City at 1 PM , Saturday, December 24, 2005 .

Special Guest Hosts: Alec Baldwin and Kevin Bacon.
